What’s On: Aberhart Starts Here

To 6 February, Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu
A rare opportunity to relish the early work of internationally renowned artist Laurence Aberhart in a series of photographs – former fast-food joints, masonic lodges, monuments, cemeteries, stucco houses and strange domestic scenes – capturing the city of Christchurch and a way of life that no longer exists.

In his late 20s, Aberhart lived in and around Christchurch (1975 to 1983) during which time he honed his artistic eye, his interest in the vanishing past and vernacular histories, and his international reputation. While the show includes several iconic images, most are unseen or little known. christchurchartgallery.org.nz
