What’s On: Frances Hodgkins’ People

16 November to 14 February, New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pukenga Whakaata

The importance of the human figure and face in the work of painter Frances Hodgkins (1869–1947) is under the spotlight in a substantial show made up of early small sketches of family members, large figure studies and formal portraits. Spanning 50 years of Hodgkins’ life, the exhibition is curated by art historian and specialist in 19th-century women artists, Dr Pamela Gerrish Nunn.

Highlights include classical images of unknown Maori women and girls from the 1900s, and the significant modernist oil on canvas, Double Portrait No2 (Katharine and Anthony West), 1937. The show includes works that have not been seen publicly. nzportraitgallery.org.nz
