What’s On: New Zealand Festival

23 February to 18 March, Wellington

Epic journeys, a sense of home and belonging, voyages of discovery and boundary-pushing artistic expeditions are the principal themes of the capital’s biennial celebration of cultural and cutting-edge arts. The festival opens with A Waka Odyssey – a massive fleet of sailing waka descend on Wellington’s harbour at dusk in a choreographed nautical performance accompanied by a 1000-strong haka and massed choir onshore.

The line-up of international and domestic acts includes Barber Shop Chronicles fresh from a sell-out run at London’s National Theatre, Vietnamese circus A O Lang Pho, the NZSO performing the Oscar-winning Star Wars soundtrack to the original film and a reimagined Swan Lake with a contemporary Irish twist. festival.co.nz
