What’s On: The Piano – The Ballet
23 to 25 February, St James Theatre, Wellington, then on tour until 7 April
Drawing rich inspiration from Jane Campion’s captivating film The Piano (1993), a tale of desire, violence and hope staged against the rugged landscape of mid-19th century Aotearoa, the RNZB presents the world premiere of a new full-length dance work by Czech choreographer Jirí Bubenícek.
The film’s central character, Scottish woman Ada McGrath, is given a powerful new voice in the dynamic production, which includes excerpts from the original film score blended with music by Debussy, Arensky, Stravinsky, Schnittke, Brahms and Shostakovich. rnzb.org.nz
