Be a tourist in your own backyard and cycle across the South Island with the Great Kiwi Escape

Take in the sights of the South Island by exploring the countryside by bike. Book now for the Great Escape, 18-26 April 2020.

Exploring the world around us is a great part of Kiwi culture. But what sometimes gets forgotten on our jet-setting adventures is the world-class beauty of our own backyard.

It’s important to be a tourist in your own country. It leads you on a journey of self-discovery and helps you connect with the rich history of our country. Plus, it’s a lot closer than going anywhere else.

And there’s no better way to explore your own backyard (or someone else’s, for that matter) than on two wheels.

Sure, you cover more distance on a bus, but you’ll whizz past the subtleties that make a trip to New Zealand so unique: the cackle of a curious kea,  the distant waft of a farmer’s freshly cut lawn.

Of course, you don’t miss a beat when you’re travelling by foot, but the going is tough, and your miles are limited. You’d need some serious fitness, and a lot of annual leave banked up to book a walking trip around the South Island.

Riding a bike is a happy medium. You can clock up a lot of kilometres without being an endurance athlete (you’d be surprised how quickly 20 kilometres flies by when you’re distracted by the sheer beauty of Mount Cook Road), and take it all in without viewing it through a windscreen.

And in true kiwi fashion, you can jump off the bike at will for a chat with an interesting local, stop to smell the kōwhai flowers, or just pause for a moment to take in or take a photo of the view. Try getting your bus driver to do that!

It’s a no-brainer for us. The casual pace of a bicycle is the best medium for exploring our special corner of the world, which is why Bicycle Network has designed the Great Kiwi Escape.

Inspired by similar ‘Great Escapes’ through the Australian Outback, Bicycle Network (an Aussie-based bike riding organisation) is looking across the ditch in 2020 to take a small group of riders on a premium, intimate, nine-day adventure around the South Island.

Yes, the South Island is big, but don’t worry – it’s not all on the bike!

The ride is designed to incorporate just the right amount of exploring and relaxation, with all-inclusive packaging filling each day with rewarding rides, some unforgettable off-bike experiences, premium accommodation, and dining, plus bus and bike transfers as you make your way from Queenstown to Christchurch.

Along the way, you’ll take in the well-known highlights such as Milford Sound, Wanaka, and Mount Cook, and some of the lesser-known delights that dot the world-class network that connects New Zealand, known as “the Great Rides.”

So, what are you waiting for? Europe and the Americas are great, but nothing beats being a tourist in your own backyard.
