What’s On: InMotion Matariki returns to Auckland’s new winter festival, Elemental AKL
Join an illuminated all-wheels parade in Wynyard Quarter for (free!) family fun at Auckland’s new winter festival – 6 July from 5:30pm.
InMotion Matariki is a fun, free and fully-accessible event on Saturday 6 July (from 5:30pm) in Wynyard Quarter’s Silo Park. The magical, illuminated evening parade celebrates Matariki and will be part of ATEED’s new winter festival, Elemental AKL.
This magaical, all-wheels event is for the whole family. People are encouraged to bring their bike, scooter, wheelchair, skateboard, unicycle or power chair – and to decorate them! Walking the illuminated parade is also an option. InMotion Matariki includes a major outdoor ‘gallery’ of digital, animated and illuminated art; sensory experiences; inclusive performance; community arts collaborations and a brilliant finale – Ika – choreographed by Rodney Bell and Chloe Loftus.
Installations will include large digitized artworks created by art therapy programme Mapura, and performances by Christchurch’s integrated dance ensemble, Jolt Dance, and Touch Compass’ hip-hop crew, Integr8 Dance Crew. Wellington’s Lucid Dreambike have created a giant Māmā and baby whale, which will lead the way.
The parade starts at 6.00pm from Silo Park’s Gantry. As the route winds around, music and performances will light the way, before ending with an outstanding aerial performance, choreographed by Bell and Loftus. After the parade, enjoy local food trucks in Silo Park.
InMotion Matariki welcomes people of all ages and abilities. The free parade kicks off at 6pm, but audience members are encouraged to be on site by 5.30pm.
Elemental AKL is a new region-wide festival illuminating Tāmaki Makaurau from Monday, 1 July to Wednesday, 31 July, 2019. Enjoy a captivating programme of more than 50 free and ticketed events which celebrate Auckland’s energy and vibrancy through light, cuisine, culture and entertainment.
