Cakes, cooking and crochet: A homegrown Mother’s Day gift guide

Believe it or not, Mother’s Day is making its creep towards us here in New Zealand, so it’s time to start thinking about what to gift the mother – or mother figure – in your life come Sunday 14th May. We’ve pulled together some of our favourite gift ideas from the thisnzlife.co.nz archives, including DIY projects, baking and experiences that will be sure to make her smile on the big day.

Use it to celebrate the woman who adores you – or sneakily send this link to someone who might need a hint. And remember, a heartfelt message in a card goes the longest way.

NATURAL MOISTURISING BARS

Use natural beeswax and coconut oil to make your own luxe moisturising bars. The solid lotion bar delivers rich rewards for dry skin, dispensing just the right amount of moisture – perfect for Mum as we move into winter.

THEMED PLANT POTS

Is mum a keen cook? Make her a foodie-themed herb planter, ready to sit in the kitchen or garden, like these ones suggested by Jane Wrigglesworth in the December 2022 issue of Lifestyle Block. For Indian cuisine lovers, okra, chillies, coriander, basil and curry plants are all great options. For Italian food lovers, try oregano, basil, rosemary, and sage. All-rounders include turmeric, coriander, lemongrass and garlic chives.

FEIJOA CAKE WITH CRUMBLE TOPPING

Whether your feijoa tree is still going strong or you froze a heap of mashed feijoa during the early autumn glut, this simple (but delicious) recipe for feijoa cake with crumble topping from the thisnzlife.co.nz archives is the perfect time to put it to use. Whip mum up this cake and take it round on Mother’s Day for a slice – alongside a cuppa and a good natter.

DIY: CROCHET BEANIE

If you’re onto things nice and early you have time to make something super special for Mum – like this crocheted lace beanie. As pretty as it is practical, it will keep mum’s head warm and toasty this winter. Plus, she’ll be able tell her friends it was made with love.
